6 Wheel Pick-Up Truck

Last summer, I was leaving my office in San Francisco and headed toward the 8th st on ramp for the Bay Bridge. Those who are familiar with the on ramp know that it is a two lane on ramp that merges in to one lane. In variably the on ramp is a parking lot at rush hour, cars are lined up inching onto Eastbound 80 that leads to the bridge. This day was no different. And like other similar days, I carefully split the two lanes to get onto the freeway. As I was proceeding, I noticed a large 6 wheel pick-up truck up ahead to my left. The traffic was completely stopped, and I noticed that the driver of the truck was looking at me in his rear view mirror. Sure enough he turned to the right into my path. Fortunately I had enough time to stop as did the fellow rider behind me. As I got close enough to his passenger window, I flipped up my visor, and he rolled down his window. Are you ready? The guy had a bottle of what looked like vodka in his hand. He was mumbling profanities at me that were completely unintelligible. By now the other rider had joined into the verbal shouting match. All the while we were sitting in the middle of the on ramp.

After a few minutes of this, the guy rolled up his window and jammed on the gas. unfortunately he rammed this poor woman's car to the right. Big damage. I and the other rider pulled in front of the guys truck and dismounted. The other rider got on to his cell and called the CHP. The woman in the car had a dog who jumped out the car and started to run around the on ramp. The drunk backed up and took off! The other rider hoped on his bike and took chase. I pulled to the side and walked off the on ramp to find a cop. I did not feel that it would be a good idea to follow this lunatic. When I got home I reported it to the CHP. The dispatcher was familiar with the case and said that the rider and another car followed the guy for about 40 miles. He eventually got away. The dispatcher instructed me to go into the CHP office the next day to file a report. Unfortunately the guy had just bought the truck and had no tags. Thus I don't think anything became of it. To top it off the CHP officer who took the report was rude and condescending.

Sometimes its better to be happy than right

I agree that you were totally in the right in this instance but what did you gain by getting into an altercation with the guy. I'm just eveasdropping on this site, I don't ride a motorcycle, but I do ride my bike to work and sometimes cars do the stupidest things, especially big SUV's and Pickup trucks (I'm in socal). However why bother yelling at them, when all that will do is give me anxiety.

It seems that by yelling at the guy you pissed him off. Maybe if you just would have gone on your way he wouldn't have hit the lady in front of you?

amen "sometimes its better to be happy than right"

For years, my main mode of trans as been two wheels (bicycle or motorcycle) and two legs (running). Now that I am over 50 the running 10 miles to work is not practical. Several years ago, I had an individual crowd me off the road while I was pedaling home, did not spill. Of course I had to let him know what I thought (no foul words - a new one for me), but politely told him to he was a jerk. Back on the road in a few seconds, only to discover the jerk was now running in reverse straight at me. I swerve just in time, so did he, this resulted in be slammed by the side of the left front panel and me rolling over the hood stunt man style. He took off after throwing his beer can and obscenities at me. I suffered a few scratches, two-mile walk home carrying my pretzel for a bike. THERE ARE TIME IT BEST TO JUST KEEP YOUR MOUTH CLOSED. I consider that was a very cheep lesson. Cars/trucks are like your wife, just best to hold you tongue.

It can be tough though...

It sometimes hard to let it go when someone tries to maim your or kill you. If their intent is to hit you when you are on a bike, they mean to do harm. Yesterday I was northbound on I83 in Maryland and had a woman tailgating me. I put my left arm down and moved my hand forward and backward for her to back off (this works for most drivers) and she ignored. When she did pass me eventually she gave me the finger - I was doing 80 at the time on a two lane interstate. No reason whatsoever but to she felt inclined to go after me. It's hard to let them go sometimes but we are better off if we do. Be safe and enjoy the ride.

6 wheel pick up

My apinion you were wrong to start out with. Just because your ride will fit between doesn't mean you have the right of way. I would have cut you off too and I've been riding for a lot of years. Riders like you are what give the rest of us a bad name. You need to learn to ride or stay off the road.

Let it go

I am with you on the lane splitting. I have been "bumped" many times in stop and go traffic, and as such almost always lane split in those situations. I have also learned to just let it go when someone fails to observe my right to my place on the road. In cases like yours, I will call the cops, but most of the time I just chalk it up to another case of DWC (Driving while caged).

CA Lane Splitting

I'm not sure which other states allow it but California allows motorcycles to ride between the lanes on highways. It is one of the advantages of riding a motorcycle in California. So don't get mad at motorcyclists when they use this to their advantage.

DWI?

And I don't think it helped that it sounded like the lunatic was driving while drunk. People like that need to be beat to death to be prevented from being a danger to everybody else.

Lane Splitting

I have no problem with motorcyclists lane splitting. But if it is dark out and traffic is moving at 30 miles an hour, please don't travel 60 miles an hour between lanes and expect someone to see you coming before they make a lane change.

Common Courtesy

It doesnt matter if you were on a motorcycle or in a car, this idiot shouldnt have been driving in the first place. I hear you out there when you say I should keep my mouth shut but I cant. Suppose instead of a motorcycle it was YOUR family in your car?? I am a police officer and deal with road rage incidents fairly often and I dont advocate violence but if this guy had done this to me I dont think bad words would have been the only thing flying..........

Drinking while driving is

Drinking while driving is extremely dangerous. So many pedestrian and passenger has lost there life in road accident. I am not just complaining about the driver's attitude but pedestrian and passenger also violates traffic system. While traveling, walking we should be careful in each step. In the context of my country , there are lots of overhead-bridge but pedestrian don't cross the road through the bridge but they try to cross through the busy road which is really dangerous. There's no one to blame for their own cause.

Oh my God, I hate that lots

Oh my God, I hate that lots of people die just because of other people's fault. If you wanna commit suicide by driving like a mad man..don't get anyone else involved! If you own a business that requires many drivers, besides the mandatory auto insurance you must be sure they respect their schedule of driving..if they get tired they kill people, just like that!

I have actually personally

I have actually personally been involved in these kinds of as well . I think that the law here is only been created but in no ways has been implemented in a systematic way . I think the whole system of road accidents , it's consequences and the end result should be fixed for every kind of accidents or accidents caused due wreckless driving . Since , the casualties here is not being paid any kind of good compensation , I think it is a must to change this system for good .

Totally agree

Totally agree with your post that drinking while driving is very injurious not only for the driver but also the people surrounds them.
Government must adopt some effective action against this.
Thanks.

Punishable crime

According to me driving after taking alcohol or driving with drinking both are punishable crime. And because of this lots of accidents are taking place around the world. So this should be stopped.

This things makes us angry..

Although this things makes us angry, it is best to just let is passed by if it doesn't harm us physically. Just to avoid another bad thing to happen.

The engine really woke up on

The engine really woke up on about the third tank; in fact I had to fight to keep it from shifting to second gear. I could tell already that the extra weight of two more tires wasn’t going to slow the truck down at all. After the fourth tank was done I went through one more tank for power tuning, and this truck has plenty of power and was easy to tune. Constant, predictable temperatures were experienced throughout the break-in process.
